Purgatory is the second part of Italian writer Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem the Divine Comedy.

 

Purgatory tells the journey of the poet Dante as, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil, he ascents the mountain of Purgatory.

 

The text is taken from Charles Eliot Norton's 1891 translation. Each of the 33 original illustrations were produced with typewriters.
